Conclusion

In every class for my Post-Master’s in Digital Curation, I have found opportunities to substantively apply my coursework in my role as a digital archivist at a classified library. It’s a new organization with an old, complex collection and unique governance needs. But studying digital curation has given me the tools for managing the challenges of developing a trusted digital repository. In the last year, my certificate work has prepared me to

  • research and select a digital asset management system,

  • prepare and digitize collections,

  • develop a metadata model for cataloging photographic collections,

  • manage file format issues,

  • update file preservation grade standards,

  • recognize and advise on governance and access issues and risks,

  • develop ingest and preservation workflows, and

  • manage photographic collections, both physical and digital.

Professional development is never done, but the Post-Master’s in Digital Curation has given me a strong foundation on which to contribute to the continued preservation and access of digital archives.
